Orbiz MCP · ChatGPT

Connect ChatGPT to your business software, with a confirmation before every change

ChatGPT can do more than talk about your work when it is connected to the system the work lives in. Orbiz MCP makes that connection for your whole organisation’s tools at once: projects, time, leave, hiring, files and pay. You create the connection in ChatGPT’s developer mode, approve what it may do on an Orbiz page, and then ask in plain words. Two things keep it in check: ChatGPT asks you to confirm before it changes anything, and Orbiz only ever lets it do what your own role can do. This page covers both sides.

Set up

Connecting ChatGPT to Orbiz, step by step

No code and nothing to install. The connection address is inside your Orbiz organisation, not on this page.

  1. In Orbiz, open Settings → Connected AI apps and copy your organisation’s connection address. It is shown only there, with a copy button.
  2. In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Create a developer-mode app for a remote MCP server, paste the address and choose OAuth as the sign-in method.
  4. ChatGPT sends you to Orbiz. Sign in as usual, tick what ChatGPT may read and what it may change, tool by tool, and approve.
  5. In a conversation, choose Developer mode from the + menu, select the Orbiz app and ask for the work.

The steps on the ChatGPT side follow its own documentation as read on 4 October 2026. Menus move; the exact steps for today are always on the Settings screen inside Orbiz.

What ChatGPT can do in Orbiz once connected

A connected assistant gets 81 actions across 9 Orbiz tools. 36 of the actions in the catalogue change something; the rest only read. None deletes anything, and the Vault has no actions at all. The work people hand over most often looks like this:

  • Turn meeting notes into Cadence issues, move them across the board, and close them with a comment.
  • Log hours against a project and milestone in Trackline, and total what you logged this month.
  • Check your leave balance in AMS, request a day off, or approve the requests waiting on you.
  • List open jobs and candidates in HRMS, add a candidate and move one to the next stage.
  • Answer “what was my net pay last month?” from Ledgr, for the person asking.
  • Find a file in Filespace, save a summary as a text file and share it.

What an assistant can and cannot reach differs by tool, and each tool’s page spells it out. For the areas people ask about most, see the pages on the HR MCP server, the payroll MCP server, the time tracking MCP server and the project management MCP server.

Developer mode: what it is and who has it

ChatGPT connects to a service like Orbiz through what OpenAI calls developer mode. OpenAI’s guide describes it as full MCP client support for all tools, both read and write, and lists it for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. You switch it on in ChatGPT’s settings, then create an app that points at a remote MCP server: in this case, your organisation’s Orbiz address.

OpenAI is blunt about the trade-off, and it is worth repeating here. Its guide calls developer mode powerful but dangerous, and names the risks: prompt injection, a model’s mistakes on actions that write, and servers that are not what they claim to be. None of that is specific to Orbiz, and all of it is a reason to connect only services you trust and to read what an action is about to do.

Two checks before anything changes

The first check is ChatGPT’s. By default it asks you to confirm an action that writes, and shows what it is about to send. You can let it remember your approval for the rest of a conversation; a new conversation asks again. Read the confirmation before you accept it, especially for anything created in bulk.

The second check is Orbiz’s, and it happens before ChatGPT is involved at all. On the approval page you tick what ChatGPT may read and change, tool by tool, and only what your role could already do is offered. If you tick reading alone, ChatGPT has no way to change anything in Orbiz, whatever it is asked. Changing pay is a separate tick that carries its own warning.

Deep research over your Orbiz content

ChatGPT’s deep research works with a connected service through two read-only tools, search and fetch. Orbiz provides both. That lets a research task draw on what your organisation keeps in Orbiz alongside the web, for example “pull together what we have on the Northwind project”.

Search and fetch read; they change nothing. And they run as you, like every other action, so research cannot surface something your role cannot open in Orbiz.

What an admin can see and switch off

Every action ChatGPT takes in Orbiz is listed in an activity log with the outcome — done, not allowed or failed — and the time. Each member sees their own in Settings → Connected AI apps; admins see the organisation’s, with the member’s name on each row. An admin can disconnect any connection and can switch AI assistants off for the whole organisation at once. The platform’s wider safeguards are on the security page.

Examples

What to ask ChatGPT

Requests people actually type. Each one maps to actions Orbiz has; the label says whether it reads or changes something.

  • “Report a bug in ORB: exporting an empty month gives a 500 on staging, with the steps I just described.”

    CadenceChanges something

  • “How many hours did I log this month, by project?”

    TracklineReads only

  • “Request casual leave for next Friday — family event.”

    AMSChanges something

  • “List the candidates in the HR round for the Designer role.”

    HRMSReads only

  • “What did I write in my notes about the Q4 offsite?”

    NotelyReads only

  • “Find the signed contract for Northwind.”

    FilespaceReads only

Staying in control

What keeps ChatGPT within bounds

Every item here is something you can see for yourself on the approval page or in Settings.

You choose what it may do

Connecting sends you to an Orbiz consent page, signed in as yourself. Access is listed tool by tool, reading separate from changing, and you can untick anything before you approve.

It acts as you, in one organisation

A connection belongs to one member in one organisation. The consent page names both, and says the assistant can only see and do what you can on the web, in the areas you allow.

Pay changes are a separate tick

Changing salaries is its own permission with its own warning on the consent page: only tick it if you run payroll.

Every action is on a list

An activity log shows each action with the assistant, the outcome — done, not allowed or failed — and the time. You see your own; admins see the organisation’s and can filter by member.

Disconnect whenever you like

Any member can disconnect an assistant from Settings → Connected AI apps, and it loses access at once. Admins can disconnect anyone’s.

One switch for the whole organisation

An admin can turn AI assistants off for everyone. That stops every assistant and blocks new connections; existing ones work again when the switch goes back on.

Some things have no action at all

There is no action for the Vault, none for clocking in or out, and none that deletes anything. An assistant cannot be talked into what does not exist.

Before you connect

What it does not do

The limits, stated plainly.

  • ChatGPT has no access to the Vault: there is no action for it.
  • Nothing can be deleted through ChatGPT, and it cannot clock anyone in or out.
  • OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts, on the web.
  • Orbiz is connected by address in developer mode; it is not an app in ChatGPT’s directory.
  • ChatGPT’s confirmation shows what it will send, not whether the request was a good idea. That judgement stays with you.
  • ChatGPT can be wrong. A bulk action is worth trying on one item first.

Questions about ChatGPT and Orbiz

Which ChatGPT plans can connect to Orbiz?

The connection uses ChatGPT’s developer mode, which OpenAI lists for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. You turn it on in ChatGPT’s settings and create an app for your organisation’s Orbiz address.

Does ChatGPT ask before it changes something in Orbiz?

Yes. By default ChatGPT asks you to confirm an action that writes and shows what it is about to send. Separately, Orbiz only allows changes in the tools where you ticked changes on the approval page, and only what your role permits.

Can ChatGPT deep research read my Orbiz data?

Yes, within your own access. Deep research uses two read-only tools, search and fetch, and Orbiz provides both. They return content you could open yourself in Orbiz and change nothing.

Is Orbiz available as an app in ChatGPT’s directory?

No. You connect it yourself in developer mode with your organisation’s connection address, which you copy from Settings, under Connected AI apps, inside Orbiz. The address is not published outside the product.
