Trackline for professional services

Margin per engagement while the engagement is running, from the hours consultants already log

A consultancy sells expertise by the hour and by the deliverable, often on the same engagement. The fee was set on an estimate; the truth arrives when the partner totals the timesheets at month end and discovers the fixed-fee phase consumed twice the hours. Trackline models each engagement the way it was sold, reads hours from the time consultants log as they work, and shows margin and estimation accuracy while there is still time to act on them.

Included in every plan. No per-seat charge, no per-tool upsell.

In practice

What Trackline does for professional services

01

Fixed-fee phases and retainer periods on one engagement

A discovery phase at a fixed fee, an implementation on milestones and an ongoing advisory retainer can all sit under one client project, each with its own schedule and effort health.

02

Cost from each consultant’s real rate

Hours are costed at the rate on each consultant’s pay profile, computed when you look. A partner’s hour and an analyst’s hour cost what they cost, so the margin on a phase reflects who did the work, not a blended assumption.

03

Estimation accuracy per engagement type

Estimated against actual effort per milestone and per person, so the next proposal for a similar engagement is priced from what the last ones actually took.

04

Utilisation and who is free next month

Logged hours, leave in AMS and current engagements give a live view of billable utilisation and available capacity, so resourcing the next engagement starts from real availability.

Where Trackline hands off for a consultancy team

Trackline owns the engagement list; consultants log time against it in AMS and the hours flow into margin, utilisation and — through Ledgr — payroll, from one record. The consultant-facing view shows each person their own engagements and hours without the firm’s margin data.

Questions consultancy teams ask about Trackline

Can we track non-billable time such as business development?

Yes. Internal work is a project like any other — business development, training, internal systems — so non-billable hours are logged against it and utilisation is billable hours over total hours, read from the same records.

Does Trackline produce the timesheet a client wants to see?

Hours per engagement, per period and per consultant are visible and exportable, which is what a client-facing timesheet is built from. Trackline does not generate a client-branded statement itself; that stays with your invoicing.

How does a consultant’s rate stay confidential?

Rates come from pay profiles in Ledgr, which only Admin and Finance Manager roles can see. Trackline shows cost and margin to the roles you grant its cost permissions to; a consultant’s own view never includes rates or margin.

Want Trackline set up for your consultancy team?

It comes with every plan, alongside the other tools. Tell us your team size and we set up a working organisation for you to try.
