In most Pakistani offices the payroll questions arrive in the first week of the month and they are nearly always the same. Why is my tax higher this month? What was my net pay in August? When does my increment show up? Many finance teams have already tried pasting a salary into ChatGPT to see what it says. Sometimes the answer is right. The trouble is knowing when.
This post separates two quite different things: ChatGPT on its own, answering from what you type into it, and ChatGPT connected to a payroll system, answering from your actual records. We make Ledgr, the payroll tool in Orbiz, so the second half describes exactly what an assistant can and cannot do there, including the large part of payroll it cannot touch at all.
ChatGPT on its own: an explainer, not a calculator of record
Unconnected, ChatGPT knows nothing about your company. It answers from its training and from whatever you paste. That makes it good at explaining: what a slab is, why tax on a salary is worked out on the year and not the month, what goes into a final settlement. It makes it a poor source of the number itself, for two reasons.
- The rules change every June. Pakistan’s salary tax table is set by each year’s Finance Act, and the current one is for tax year 2026-27. The Finance Act, 2026 lowered the rates from Rs 2.2 million upwards, added two slabs, and removed the surcharge on salaried individuals. A model trained before a budget, or one that mixes two years, gives an answer that looks right and is not.
- Your payroll is not in the chat. Withholding in Pakistan is a projection of the whole year: salary already paid, salary still to come, any increment or bonus. Unless you paste all of that, the assistant is guessing, and if you do paste it you have just sent your staff’s salaries to a chatbot.
For the figure, use a tool that carries the dated table. Our free Pakistan salary tax calculator works from the slabs as enacted for each year from the Finance Act, and shows, for example, that the first Rs 600,000 of annual taxable income is not taxed in 2026-27. The final settlement calculator does the same line by line for a leaver. Then ask ChatGPT to explain the result in plain words, if that helps. How annualised salary tax withholding works covers why a payslip’s tax changes month to month.
ChatGPT connected to Ledgr: what it can read
Connected through Orbiz MCP, an assistant stops guessing and reads the records. Ledgr gives it 7 actions: 5 that read and 2 that change something. Every one runs as the person who connected the assistant, with that person’s permissions.
For every employee: their own pay
Two actions are about the person asking: a pay summary and a list of payslips. So “what was my net pay in August?” and “list my payslips for this year” get an answer from Ledgr, not from a model’s memory. An employee’s assistant sees that employee’s pay exactly as Ledgr shows it to them on the web, and nobody else’s. Asking for a colleague’s salary gets nothing it could not get by signing in.
For payroll managers: profiles and salary changes
Three actions appear only for a role that already has payroll permissions in Ledgr: read a member’s pay profile, propose a salary revision with the new amount, the date it applies from and the reason, and change a member’s salary directly.
Changing pay is never bundled with reading it. When you connect, it is a separate tick from reading, with a warning that says it lets the assistant change pay and should be ticked only by people who run payroll. Our advice is to start with reading alone and, when you do allow changes, prefer the proposal: it puts the revision in front of a person instead of making it.
What ChatGPT cannot do in payroll
This is the longer list, and it is longer on purpose. Through an assistant, Ledgr does not expose:
- Payroll runs and salary sheets
- Submitting claims or requesting loans, and anyone else’s claims, loans or settlements
- Tax registers and certificates
So an assistant can tell someone what they were paid, and it cannot decide what anyone is paid this month. Building the salary sheet from the attendance in AMS, approving it, issuing payslips, recovering loans, settling a leaver and keeping the tax deposit register all happen in Ledgr with a person at the screen. Tax slabs and EOBI are settings the finance team maintains there; an assistant cannot edit them either. Nothing can be deleted through an assistant in any Orbiz tool.
Why the line sits where it does
Payroll mistakes are expensive in a particular way: they are paid out before anyone notices. A model that misreads “from January” as this January, or a request typed into the wrong conversation, should not be able to move money. OpenAI’s own guide to developer mode, the route ChatGPT uses to connect to a service like Orbiz, calls it powerful but dangerous and names model mistakes on write actions as a risk. It also says write actions ask for confirmation by default. That confirmation is a good habit; it is not a substitute for an action that does not exist.
So the boundary is in the catalogue, not in a setting someone has to remember: there is no action to run payroll, so no request, however worded, can run it. The full list is on the Ledgr assistant page.
Setting it up for a Pakistani finance team
- Decide who connects. Every member can connect their own assistant; it only ever sees what they can. For employees that means their own pay, which is the question finance hears most.
- Check the assistant’s side. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. Claude’s help pages list custom connectors for its Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
- Connect from inside Orbiz. The steps are in Settings → Connected AI apps. Tick reading for Ledgr; leave pay changes unticked unless you run payroll.
- Read the log. Each action an assistant takes is listed with the outcome and the time. An admin sees the organisation’s, and can switch assistants off for everyone.
