How arrears are worked out
Take each pay period between the effective date and the last run, and subtract what was paid from what would have been paid at the new rate. A raise from 200,000 to 230,000 a month, approved in October and effective from July, leaves arrears of 30,000 for each of July, August and September — 90,000 in all, paid with October’s salary.
Anything calculated on salary follows. Contributions charged on gross pay, and allowances set as a percentage of basic, have their own arrears for the same months, and a correct calculation carries them through rather than adjusting the gross alone.
